Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D1. DBT combines the effective techniques of CBT and adds emphasis upon validation coupled with change.
DBT consists of 4 components as follows:
- Individual DBT Psychotherapy (at least 1-year terms)
- Skills Training Group with DBT workbook
- Phone Contact with therapist
- Therapist attends peer consultation group weekly
Unless a clinician is doing all 4 components, he or she is only drawing on DBT techniques. Linehan's website reads, "In DBT, a therapist is not considered to be meeting the requirements of the treatment unless he or she meets weekly in a DBT consultation team"2
***For clinicians interested in joining the weekly consultation team that meets in Nashville (Thursdays 5:30-7:00) email me for more information
